Artist statement:
Themes of interconnectedness underlie this work. Dark blue backgrounds suggest water, depth, what lies beneath. This is the foundation in which free flowing white lines move, without destination. Not planned, they follow intuition and emergence, created through the principles of flow, presence and non forcing.
Where lines meet and overlap something changes. Some encounters expand. Some dissolve. All are real. The ripple travels further than we see.
The hanging strips of paper are connected by thread, sewn without a plan, crossing over itself, following where the thread intuitively wants to go next. The gaps held open between the papers are not empty. In Daoist philosophy the space between things is where the Dao is most present. The vessel is useful because of what it does not contain.
This work draws on the Dao, also written as Tao, the unnameable source beneath all things. Wu wei, acting without forcing, yielding rather than pushing, is both the philosophy and the practice here. The line only works when you stop trying to control it. Life moves the same way.
Imagine the ocean. A wave rises, briefly takes its own shape, and falls back into the water it was always part of. We are something like that wave. For a time we appear separate, but we were never truly apart from where we came from, and we return to it again.
Before I was, I am. Before this life, I already was, not as this person, but as the same source everything emerges from. And so is everything I have ever encountered, every person, every creature, every tree and fleeting quality of light. We are the same ocean, taking different shapes for a while.
